MATTERS OF THE HEART

It is speculated, that during his time at Surrey's Moor Park, Swift had the pleasure to meet Esther Johnson, a young girl, niece of Sir William Temple. He tutored her in her childhood and gave her the nickname, Stella. The 15 year difference between them made it very hard for their love to be made public, but they supposedly married in secret in 1716. Swift kept a record of his feelings for Stella in a series of letters, which would be then published after his death under the title, "The Journal to Stella." The letters contained all of Swift's thoughts on current events and people, humorous uptakes on occurrences and influential personalities as well as many flattering and loving messages to his lover.
