Council of the EU Committee Update

The Clauses

  • The delegation of Slovenia wants to implement democratic elections in Belarus by Jan 1st, 2021, President of Belarus Lukashenko to be trialed along with other party members of the Belaya Rus Party by the International Court of Justice.

  • The delegation of Slovenia also asks that the House of Representatives leads the countries’ political parties and apparatus and for a future election, to prevent falsification of the result, that at least 1000 observes be present during the elections at polling stations.

  • The delegation of Germany calls for all western countries to give their support to the Belarussian Government in transitioning to a Democracy as well as give military support to Belarus in case of a soft annexation by the Russian Federation.

The Debate

This morning at the EU council plans to install a democratic government in Belarus were discussed. These included the possibility, proposed by the delegation of Slovenia, of trailing the leaders of Belarus and Belaya Rus Party and Lukashenko himself. Belarus has been under the fist of Lukashenko since 1994, when he was elected president. Many changes have been made, including some to the National Flag.

The party of Lukashenko has been reelected with foreign interference from Russia, so there is a possibility of a “soft annexation” by the Russian Federal Republic”. Therefore, the delegation of Germany has called for all western countries to lend support to Belarus in case of such an event. Also, similar to that of Slovenia, Germany has proposed to give support to the Belarussian government in hope of installing democracy.

In this way, a possible civil war could be avoided, helping to maintain peace between Russia, Belarus, and the West.

But the resolution doesn’t come without flaws. For example, it has been proposed to install at least 1000 observes at the electoral polls of the elections to make sure no such rigging occurs. Although this could possibly counter such an event, the observers could’ve been bribed or could end up being double agents working for a third party organization funded by Russia or Lukashenko’s party.
